Flow cytometry alows the analysis of phytoplankton over wide spatial scales on ferry ships
and research vessels. CytoSense can be used for interactive discrete sampling of live
samples taken for instance with the Rosette water bottle sampler, but also in autonomous
sampling mode. This is the method of choice if a continuous sea water supply is available
(a small tubing pump suffices) and the ship is doing transects, such as usually with ferry
ships (ship of opportunity) or on research cruises during the night and between stations.
Depending on preference, the CytoSense samples in short time intervals (typically a few
minutes) or on preselected time stamps. Direct depth profiles can be done with the
submerged version CytoSub.
For the use of a CytoSense on board of ships we have developed a light weight aluminum
frame containing high quality silicone filled vibration dampers and a clamp ring for
mounting the CytoSense at various heights. The frame consists of a lower part and a top part that is attached for transport only.
